🤔 Project failure rates – a call to action or complacency?
I recently had the privilege of being a keynote speaker at the Project Management Institute of New Zealand conference in Wellington. It was an excellent event. My presentation focused on the case for #P3G (Project, Program and Portfolio Governance), highlighting how poor governance often contributes significantly to project failure. Throughout the conference, it was sobering to hear many presenters echo the sentiment that despite advancements in methodologies, technologies, and expertise, numerous projects still struggle to achieve their intended outcomes, deliver value, and meet objectives. The enduring prevalence of failure rates over several decades prompts a critical question: has failure become so normalised that it's accepted as the norm rather than a call to action? 🔍 Maximizing Impact: Transforming Project and Programme Boards into decision powerhouses
In the dynamic landscape of project and programme management, the efficacy of Project and Programme Boards / Steering Committees often hinges on their ability to drive decision-making rather than serving as mere conduits for information exchange. Across various client organisations, I've observed a common trend: these forums sometimes prioritise information dissemination over a focus on MATERIAL MATTERS that have a direct impact on the delivery and outcome performance of projects and programs. To unlock the true potential of these important governance constructs, it is imperative to refocus their purpose and modus operandi. 🔍 How to ensure Technical Governance Groups contribute to Project and Program Success Rationale and Purpose: In today's business landscape, projects and programs involve complex technical components requiring specialised oversight and inputs. Technical Governance Groups, such as Technical Oversight, Review, Reference, Standards, Architecture, and Excellence committees, play a pivotal role in ensuring effective governance, alignment with objectives, and adherence to standards and best practice. 31/1/2024
